- {Pre-COVID} Egg Painting! -

D I S C L A I M E R :  This post is a throwback to 2.5 weeks ago before the words "social distancing" or "shelter-in" or "COVID-19" were words that became a part of our daily vocabulary.  That's all.

**********

Everyone who knows me well knows I LOVE fun little traditions, so when Dana invited us to the pottery joint to paint Easter eggs, I couldn't say no!  A photo of an Easter basket full of hand-painted pottery/eggs that her boys had painted over the years was attached to the message, and it all came just in the nick of time before coronavirus hit hard and social distancing was recommended!

We love spending time with these fun neighbors, and I'm so thankful that they introduced us to this wonderful family tradition!  Great friends and fun times:  don't mind if we do!!!
A week after the painting trip, the pottery place called to let us know the eggs were ready for pickup.  I love the finished products and can't wait for the girls to continue adding eggs to the basket each year from here on out! <3

- COVID Diaries: Week 2 -

Diving into social distancing: week 2 like...

Hah!  I joke.  But in all reality, aside from Harper not going to school 3 days/week and all of us not being able to hit up the Children's Museum or YMCA or library any day at any time, this "quarantine" situation has just been a very extreme version of our normal daily lifestyle.  I'm a borderline introvert and the kids are definite homebodies [neither one ever wants to get up and off to school or daycare in the morning, and on Harper's days off school I have to all but kick her little booty out the door if we ever want to make it anywhere before dinnertime!].  However, with all the extra down time, I can't keep myself from reading ...and reading ...and reading.  While it's good to stay up-to-date, all of this information has been a lot more anxiety-inducing than I realized it would be.  Maybe it's my career, but I can't stop entertaining scenarios such as:  What will happen to the healthcare system?  Will the hospital I work at be overwhelmed with infected patients?  Will I be pulled from the job[s] I currently have and love to work the front lines of COVID-19 when ER and ICU nurses become exposed or exhausted?  Will there even be enough ICU beds in St. Louis, or will physicians have to pick and choose who receives care?  Will the PPE run out?  Will co-workers that I work alongside and love die?  Will I bring the virus home to Brian or the kids?  The list of uncertainties goes on and on and on, and I notice myself becoming most agitated with all of it when -- every which way we look [mostly on social media but also in real life]  -- PEOPLE ARE NOT STAYING HOME!  Seriously, what in the actual #^&$???!  Come on, people.  Stop being dopes.  Social distancing saves lives!!!  The writing for all of this is on the wall.  I honestly don't understand.  The governor put out a new statement this week, and I hope people change their ways and follow the recommendations before it's way too late.  Graphs like this terrify me...
...and should honestly terrify everyone.  Sighhhhhh, I didn't want this to head down a dark, deep rabbit hole...

...so time to shut it off, flip gears, and zoom in on the silver lining.

Let's try again.

**********

A couple of weeks ago during our doomsday/stock-up shopping spree, we zoomed through the baking aisle at Walmart to stock up on sugar, flour, etc.  Harper knew my birthday was coming up, so she asked me to close my eyes as she picked out a box cake and a jar of sprinkles and tucked them away into the bottom of the cart.  As soon as we got home from the grocery store, she unloaded the bag and hid the cake and sprinkles under her bed where they would, of course, stay safe and secret!  Fast forward to this past Saturday, my 31st birthday! The cake was resurrected and mixed with love!
It was a chilly day, but we bundled up and enjoyed a family walk through the subdivision [capped off with bike rides for Brian and the girls -- he needs to buy his own bike ASAP so all 4 of us can go together!  Meanwhile, I let him borrow my bike so I can stay sedentary... ;)].  Afterwards, Brian made a special dinner as the kids excitedly prepped the birthday cake with a handful of candles that "definitely were not trick candles!..."
Joining in live via FaceTime, Grammy, Papa, and Blake got to sing, "Happy Birthday!" too!  ...The candles WERE tricky ones, by the way!
We capped off the evening with a few rounds of Old Maid.  I lost the final game fair and square; the truth hurts!  #oldmaid  #thisis31
However!  In better best news, quality time is my love language and having my little family at home and all to myself [on Saturday and indefinitely] actually made for a pretty great birthday!  Brian said this shelter-in business was my personal gift from the governor!  From Harper picking out my birthday cake mix and sprinkles to Brian cooking breakfast AND dinner to Scarlett initiating the “Happy Birthday” song before helping blow out all my candles, I adore the way my favorite humans can so easily make me feel so special!  Thanks, too, for all the virtual love from friends and family near and far; y’all are the absolute best and know how to make a girl feel loved!

On Sunday morning, I sipped coffee from this super cute mug which was a birthday gift from my very sweet next-door neighbor.  She also sewed this mask for me to take to work if worse comes to worst [but depleted PPE is a depressing topic for another day]!
As I was lounging, Harper was furiously searching for paper, pens, scissors, and tape.  After getting everything set up, she started asking how to spell certain words and I realized she was making a scavenger hunt for me.  She asked if it was still my birthday [such a little sweetie; God bless her heart!] as she searched for empty gift bags and gifts to fill them with.  Thank you, Harper, for the lovely surprise.  You're a gem!
I had to work on Monday, so Brian kept the kids while he worked from the basement.  I didn't get many updates throughout the day, but everyone was alive and well when I got home so I guess it went alright!  On Monday night, we had a family movie night and Harper picked Frozen 2...

...which led to Tuesday being FROZEN DAY!!!  Elsa and Anna are IN 'da house!
Elsa learned about paleontologists and what tools they use ^^ before taking a break to read books with Anna...
We also had our blinds delivered that afternoon.  What a huge difference they make!!!
On Wednesday, we put together a Sprout House and "planted" the bean inside.  Harper filled out page 1 of the Plant Journal and taped the Sprout House to her bedroom window where it would be sure to get plenty of sunlight.  We are hoping for some good results!
[I printed a Sprout House for Scarlett, too, but she learned how to use scissors this week and so!  Hers was sawed and shredded into nearly one hundred pieces by the time we were finished decorating Harper's.  But hey, if a $2 pair of kids' scissors and a piece of copy paper can keep our little gal occupied for 30+ minutes on end, I'll take it!!!]

Harper also received a packet of worksheets in the mail that my mom dug up from her old teaching days!  I was so sure when we opened the packet that all of the math problems would be way too hard for Harper, but we got some quarters out and started adding away.  She's been LOVING addition and definitely understands what she's doing with counting/adding quarters.  I'm so proud of her!
After a [forced] nap, we opened a stepping stones DIY kit that Harper got from Aunt Margy and Uncle Steve for her birthday and poured the first stone!  As soon as we set it aside in the mold to dry for 8 hours...

...the FedEx delivery man knocked on the front door with the kids' brand new Power Wheels!!!  It took a while for Brian to put it all together, but he finished just in time for the girls to take a joy ride before dark.
While I worked again on Thursday, the kids were home with Brian.  During one of his conference calls, they were invited to the neighbors' driveway to make chalk art!  Loved getting this text update at work!
On Friday, we had breakfast with our rapidly-growing catepillars...
...and then dug into some bead art!  We made name bracelets for some friends and family members and plan to mail them out soon.  We hope that wearing the bracelets will remind those we love how much we miss them during these crazy times!

While Harper diligently worked on creating color patterns and finding all the letter beads needed to spell people's names, Scarlett was most entertained by transferring beads from bowl to plate...
...and eventually just dumping mixed beads back and forth between two bowls!  She did help me string a few beads on one bracelet but didn't have too long of an attention span for it. :)
Phew, this is getting long; more to come on this project ^^ as the bracelets are delivered and we continue to make a few more each day!

Final thoughts for this post:  when I can occasionally box off all the unknowns and anxieties [mentioned up at the top] into a small place in the back of my mind, I've been trying to hone in on all of the positives that sheltering-in has brought so far and really focus on the things and people that matter most.  I think this week's photos are really reflective of this and how much we're enjoying all the uninterrupted family time we've had lately!  I know that we'll get through this and will come out better and stronger on the other side.  I sincerely hope that all of you, our dear family and friends, stay sheltered-in as much as possible during this crazy time.  Your health and safety [and sanity] are at the top of our prayer list... Please pray for us, too!

- COVID Diaries: Week 1 -

[A bellowing]  H E L L O  from the other side!

We're a full ONE week deep into social distancing over here, and holy whoa:  on every level possible, WHAT an unbelievable week it's been!  Here we were 2 weeks ago thinking we wouldn't make it out alive after Daylight Savings Time, a full moon, and Friday the 13th; then, coronavirus reared its ugly head and blew all of that out of the water.  Reacting and adjusting to this has been insane; I honestly can't wrap my mind around the magnitude of all of it and what it means for our country, but with each day that passes I do grow more fearful for "healthcare" as we know it and also anxious for my beloved co-workers and all healthcare workers and first responders across the country.  Oyyyyy vey, these are not good times.

On a more positive note, things at home have been better than ever!  I'm notorious for getting a little stir crazy if I'm stuck inside the house too long, but [so far] I've been very even-keeled and pleasantly surprised with the smooth transition that all 4 of us have made to "sheltering in."  While it's been hard to explain to the kids why school and daycare are closed and we have to stay at home .e.v.e.r.y...s.i.n.g.l.e...d.a.y., I have to commend Harper's teachers for guiding us through this confusing and unprecedented time.  Literally two days after the governor shut down all Illinois schools, I had 2 weeks worth of home learning materials in my e-mail inbox from Harper's teacher.  Between e-mails and Facebook posts and videos, the school teachers and administrators have been so present, caring, and steadfast through all of this.  We definitely feel their love and compassion for the kiddos and can't wait to see them all again soon!  *fingers crossed*

So!  The last week in [not] a nutshell...

Last weekend, we barely squeaked [half of] Harper's birthday festivities in before COVID-19 sh*t hit the fan...

...and Monday was "business as normal" for 3/4 of us with me to work, Brian to work, and Scarlett to daycare.  Harper stayed with Grammy Ann since the schools closed.

Tuesday was St. Patrick's Day, and we made the best of spending it at home this year [which was a TOTAL BUMMER, because we are Dogtown parade patrons through and through!].  We got festive with green eggs and pancakes for lunch!
Tuesday was also Brian's first day working from home, and the kids loved having him here even though he was "off limits" most of the time!

Many neighbors hung shamrocks in their windows so individual families could walk around the subdivision on a shamrock hunt. So fun!  Have I mentioned lately that I love our neighborhood?!  We hung a few in our front windows for other families to find!
Again, thanks to Harper's teachers for the home learning packet and craft materials!
Tuesday evening, we had to take a roadtrip to the rentsies' house to get Brian's large computer monitors so he could set up a better/more practical workspace to actually work from home.  In hindsight, the kids and I probably should've stayed home and sent Brian up solo, but my heart knew this would be one of our last "outings" for a while and it was actually a little sad knowing this was also the last time we'd see all of the grandparents for several weeks, so off we went...  We have stayed connected via FaceTime as the week progressed, but it's definitely not the same as seeing our parents love on our babies in the flesh! :(
On Wednesday, we buckled down on the home learning and Harper worked on color sight words...
...while Scarlett colored her Easter craft from Grammy Ann!  We also constructed an EXTRA large fort to read books in [all 4 of us could get in, yet all 4 of us could not get out without breaking the mold, lol]!
On Friday, we learned about caterpillars and butterflies.  After hearing the word "metamorphosis" [or "mor-fa-meth-a-sis" as Harper called it] for the first time since age 18, I became a little concerned that my home-teaching abilities may max out after the Pre-K level!
^^ After finishing the school worksheets, we made all sorts/shapes of butterfly artwork...
...and also listened to The Very Hungry Caterpillar on YouTube and colored a paper of all the things we thought a veryyyyy hungry caterpillar could eat through.  Here's mine! ;) :)
All of this caterpillar/butterfly schoolwork inspired me to impulse-buy a butterfly farm/growing kit on Amazon.  I think the kids will really enjoy it, though, especially since we're homebound indefinitely and there aren't any other living/growing/metamorphosis-ing activities going on around the house!  If it turns out as I hope, we will be sure to keep you posted with our results!

Saturday was my birthday, so I'll cap it off here and add those photos to COVID Diaries: Week 2.  Stay tuned!

...Also stay healthy.

...ALSO...STAY HOME!!! :)

- Zero.one.two.three.four. F I V E ! ! ! -

**********
Harper Cecilia,

So sweet... So beautiful... Sooooo kind... I must admit, I kind of really love having a big FIVE-year-old in the house!!!  You are a dream come true in more ways than one.  I love your inquisitiveness and your desire to learn and grow; you are a dry sponge that soaks up anything/everything we say or do.  You are thriving at the parish preschool three days/week and blossoming in faith and love; your maturity is incredible and your big heart inspirational!  Your birthday started this year a few days early as we prepped a cupcakes snack for your classmates...
...and then on your "real" birthday, you took Daddy to school for the Donuts with Dudes event!
^^ As a surprise treat, we signed you out early from school, and you and Daddy came home with Starbucks and walked right into your birthday scavenger hunt!
You later told me that you "didn't really like the box of clothes that the first group of clues led to but didn't want to say it out loud to be rude," but you MOST definitely loved the Power Wheels, "electric bed," and fort building kit! ...Admittedly, the clothes were my idea and the others were daddy's ideas, but no surprise there because #funparent forever and ever amen.  Whattttt a birthday!
Hours DAYS later, this building kit is still a hit and has been manipulated into probably 15+ structures!  You are awesomely artistic and crazy creative for only being 5!!!
For dinner, you requested to go to "the Mexico restaurant."  I told you in the car that we would tell the waiter it was your birthday, and you asked me three times during dinner if I had told him yet...

...then, all the sudden...SURPRISE!!! :D
We had scheduled your skating party at the YMCA for the following day, but pumppppp the brakes:  ENTER CORONAVIRUS.  Despite the YMCA remaining open through the quickly evolving pandemic, we made the tough decision to cancel the party to participate in social distancing and keep our friends and family safe [and other peoples' friends and families who would've also been at the YMCA that day].  It broke my heart to break the news to you [privately teared up in the bedroom before gaining composure to come tell you!], but you were so understanding and sweet [which cued the private waterworks again].  Was I more disappointed than you?!  ...We'll never ever know, but BLESS YOU for rolling right along with the punches and making the best of plan B after you had been looking so forward to the skating situation.  We still had the grandparents over for dinner and cake, and it turned out to be the best case scenario with the limited options we had!
With a little help from Scarlett on the sidelines, you knocked out all five candles...multiple times!  They were trick candles, which is perfect for you as you're quite the little trickster these days!
I'm really trying to figure out when/how 5 years came and went; it seems like just last week that you were a tiny, red-faced, screaming newborn!  You've now grown into one of the most beautiful little girls we've ever seen!  We love your sweet soul and sassy spirit and are SO LUCKY to call you ours!

Happy 5th birthday, Harper girl!  We love you to the moon!!!  :)))
